We all participate in our individual paths of development. This path includes the predictable steps of birth, learning to walk, talk, and use the bathroom, among others. Families also travel developmental paths with steps that include forming a couple, childbirth, raising an infant, toddler, and preschooler, sending a child off to school, guiding a child through adolescence, and welcoming them to adulthood. Steps in development are opportunities for growth. They can also present challenges and crises. During these times, some families seek professional consultation.
